Are we pretending?

I discovered, much to my huge excitement, that when you drop in a completely contemporary line into one of these songs it’s so jarring. I could put a line about waking up with an erection in my hand into a song which you’d previously happily thought of as something else. There was a danger in that. To me it jarred in a lovely way

It’s a whole lot quieter now

Drag is the new punk

This is the sound of men contemplating their thinning hairline, the bulge of their belly, and the sad sag of their underpants

Where did that little girl go?

That was a bit slight

My eyes wander over to the boys barely old enough to ride swimming in the heated pool, girls in string bikins and highheels lounging by the jacuzzi, anime scultures everywhere, a mosiac of youth, a place you don’t really belong anymore

‘Hungry like the wolf’ rising faintly above the leaping chatter of the club, transporting me for one long moment into someone both young and old. Sadness: it’s everywhere
